Era adjustment is the worst symptom of an unhealthy tendency of taking meaningful statistics, contorting them to abstract figures, and re-applying them in the most insignificant way possible.

Really terrible.

I can't help but thinking that something should be done to avoid this happening in the future. The whole idea of a 'bouncer' is absurd to me because the ball aims neither for the bat, nor the wicket. Better helmets are not the answer - helmets are designed to prevent skull fracture, not traumatic brain injury (which is caused by acceleration/deceleration forces acting on the brain).

Absolutely tragic, he was a very likable player.

It's difficult to remove such a historic mode of delivery from the game though, it's part of the culture. It is worth noting though that it has been limited by regulations, you can't just continually bowl bouncers as in the past but I can't imagine it being banned. The issue is that it's hard to use this as the basis for action because it is a freak accident. Even if you did regulate against the use of bouncers, errant deliveries will always happen regardless of intent and that is where helmet design will likely be involved as the issue to solve. Apart from perhaps stricter regulations on helmets that may be approved for professional use, I doubt we'll see much action, Cricket Australia and the ICC are hardly progressive bodies.
